Going from a Co-Worker to a Manager
Share
Sometimes getting a promotion can be a little tricky. This is especially true is it is your first promotion, and you will be supervising folks who used to be your co-workers.
Here are a few tips that I suggest you try. No, they aren't magic, but they will help you a little bit.
- Announce it. Humbly let people know that you realize the dynamic will change. Ask them for feedback and open communication.
- Don’t play favorites. Let people know you want to treat everyone fairly.
- Ease into your duties. Adapt and change first before asking others to adapt and change.
Remember that no reasonable person expects you to be perfect. What is more important is they want you to be sincere and not hypocritical.
Finally: The above advice is good if you are a new manager, but it is also solid advice regardless of your management experience. Honest humility is a great quality for managers at all levels.
